Situate yourself on a sliding scale

There is no formula for determining the exact means of each individual. The elements to be taken into consideration when assessing your resources include your income, but also the different levels of material and economic resources to which you have access, and the difficulties you face.

The price scale encourages us to pay according to the resources we have access to. Of course, each person's situation is unique, and the following lists cannot cover every situation. That's why I encourage you to pay an amount you feel comfortable with.

Consider paying less if you

  • receive financial support from the government (unemployment, welfare, pension, disability, etc

  • are unemployed (not by choice) and/or unable to work due to age, illness, disability, criminal record, etc.

  • often have difficulty meeting basic needs (food, housing, transportation, health care and medication)

  • are in a precarious housing situation (not by choice) and/or risky and/or dangerous housing situation

  • have medical expenses not covered by insurance or the government

  • are a refugee and/or have immigration-related expenses

  • are black, indigenous or a person of color

  • are trans

  • have dependents

  • are retired and have little financial support

  • experience violence, abuse, intimidation, discrimination, oppression, because of your race, religion, gender, class, age, work, appearance, weight, activism, living situation, etc.

  • do sex work

  • regularly spend time in activism, peer support, volunteering, caring for a loved one as a caregiver, etc.

  • have a lot of debt or are unable to obtain credit or loans

Consider paying more if you

  • have income you can spend after meeting your basic needs (restaurants, bars, non-essential items, workshops, outings, leisure activities, travel, etc.)

  • have savings and can save regularly

  • own one or more properties and/or have investments, retirement savings or inherited money

  • have access to or receive, when you need them, resources from your family assets

  • work part-time by choice

  • have sessions paid for by another person/organization/institution

  • have a great capacity to earn a living given your level of education or gender/race/class/etc. privilege, even if you don't currently exercise this capacity
